Dear Amazing Supporters,
We are thrilled to share the latest updates from Kenya, where your support is transforming lives. Thanks to your generosity, young girls at risk of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are finding safety, support, and the chance to chase their dreams. Each day, we work to create a future filled with hope and opportunity for these girls, and it is your support that makes this possible.
The Legal Letter & Vacation Check-In Campaign
In late March, 2025, as the school term came to a close and girls prepared to head home for the April holidays, we launched a campaign to protect them from the heightened risk of FGM and child marriage during this vulnerable period.
During the final weeks of Term 1, we distributed legal awareness letters to girls in different schools, who then took them home to their parents and guardians. These letters explained that FGM is illegal in Kenya and that violations carry serious legal consequences. They also included emergency contact information and guidance for families needing support.
In the second week of April, we organized vacation check-ins with every girl in our care. These were not just routine follow-ups, they were conversations designed to ensure that each girl felt seen, supported, and safe. Our team made sure each girl had a holiday safety plan, understood her rights, and knew how to reach us if any danger emerged.
These simple but strategic actions continue to make a deep and lasting impact, and the stories of two remarkable young women in our program remind us why this work matters so much.
Why It Matters – Sarah and Naomi’s Journey
Sarah N. and Naomi K. were both rescued from the threat of FGM three years ago. When they first arrived, they were frightened girls running from a future they did not choose. Today, they are strong, confident young women, now in their final year of high school.
Sarah escaped from an arranged cutting ceremony by climbing out of a window and fleeing to her school. A teacher secretly sheltered her until we could bring her into our care. Her courage that night saved her life. Naomi came to us after learning she had been promised in marriage during a school break. She walked for hours to reach one of our team members.
Over the past three years, we have watched these girls blossom. We have provided them with shelter, counseling, and the education they never thought possible. Naomi now dreams of becoming a lawyer. Sarah wants to work with girls like herself, to help them break free from violence and reclaim their futures.
Last April, as we checked in with Sarah and Naomi again during the school holidays, their presence reminded us why the Legal Letter and Vacation Check-In Campaign is so crucial. These efforts are not just about prevention, they are about staying committed to every girl’s safety and success, long after the initial rescue.
The Impact of Your Support
Because of your generosity, we were able to prevent new cases of FGM in the last school break. We strengthened community awareness, reinforced the rule of law, and reminded families that both the government and our team are watching, and that help is always available.
Your support also means that girls like Sarah and Naomi thrive. They are proof that long-term care and education change everything. Because you stayed with them, they are about to graduate high school with dignity, confidence, and a vision for their futures.
Let us continue this journey together. The girls are counting on us, and with your support, we know we can create a world where every girl is free to dream and achieve.
With deepest gratitude,
The FGM Zero Team
