Summary

Ninety thousand people seeking refuge struggle to meet their basic needs in Greece. This project: 1) Gives children, youth, and women living in refugee camps opportunities to heal from trauma and develop skills through play, sports, and activities to bolster their psychosocial well-being. 2) Helps families put food on the table, find safe housing, and access legal/medical/other services so they can focus on rebuilding their lives (8,500 people whom 40% are children supported since 2021).

Challenge

Greece, like neighboring countries that receive the majority of asylum seekers crossing the Mediterranean, tries to dissuade refugees from coming by implementing very harsh asylum policies and making life extremely difficult for those who are already there. They have reduced housing and food support, leaving tens of thousands at risk of hunger and homelessness. Conditions in refugee camps have become increasingly austere, exacerbating stress and cutting people off from basic public services.

Solution

Lighthouse Relief supports over 2,000 people monthly by providing food baskets to 250 families, organizing activities for mental well-being of individuals aged 3-25 in refugee camps, offering emergency housing for vulnerable single mothers and children, and facilitating referrals for jobs, housing, legal aid, and other necessities for integration into society.

Long-Term Impact

Our project will ensure that hundreds of families have the ongoing support they need to build self-reliance and begin to flourish in their new surroundings. We connect some of Greece's most vulnerable refugees to services that prevent them from falling through the cracks in the asylum and humanitarian support systems. Our services empower people to gain the confidence, skills, and know-how they need to rebuild their lives.
