*Mariam's path to healing

By Christianna Vaso | Communications and Development Officer

In 2020 baby Mariam* and her family arrived on Lesvos, seeking asylum. Today, after fleeing Morocco, the family has received refugee protection and lives in Athens. Their journey has been one of hope and challenges, and nearly achieved a happy ending. However, there was a twist…

Mariam, now a toddler, recently stopped speaking and become extremely withdrawn. Reactions such as withdrawal, communication difficulties and behavioral changes are fairly common among children who have experienced trauma. Our staff, attuned to these nuances of trauma, offers interventions that can help children heal.

Concerned for her daughter’s well-being, her mother approached our Mental Health and Psychosocial Support team. They recommended that Mariam regularly join our child-friendly space in Athens, where she could play, learn, and socialize under the care of trauma-sensitive professionals.

Within just a few months of regular attendance, Mariam regained her voice, albeit she started speaking in English, rather than her native Arabic! Her mother laughed when she told us that switching languages is a small price to pay for the joy of hearing her daughter speak again!

Your support doesn't simply provide sustenance and shelter; it extends far beyond the basic necessities. Your compassion helps establish secure environments that leave a lasting imprint on the lives of the people that we serve, fostering their integration into our community

We are deeply grateful for your unwavering support as we continue our mission to protect the lives of people seeking refuge in Greece.
