Programme Report for August - October 2024

By Natalie Conti | Project Leader

Demonstration School Success:

The CharChar Trust has successfully concluded a transformative literacy programme at the Malawi Government Primary School, which serves as a Demonstration School to Emmanuel University in Lilongwe, Malawi. Through the dedicated work of three Literacy Specialist Teachers (LSTs) and Senior Education Officer Andrew Mchisa, the programme achieved remarkable outcomes that directly address Malawi's literacy crisis. Thanks are due to the government staff at this school for their support. We would also like to warmly thank our two UK funding partners who have supported the work and provided a project extension allowing the work to continue from April 2022 to the end of the learners’ academic year in 2024.

Key Achievements:
75% of learners demonstrated strong mastery of letter names and sounds across all participating classes
Standard 1 learners showed impressive capabilities in segmenting and blending sounds to read words
Standard 2 learners Achieved 96% success in CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words E.g. ‘tap’, ‘pit’ and 91% in high frequency words E.g. ‘and’ ‘of’ ‘it’
Standard 3 learners Achieved 80% success rate in the more complex Standard 3 CVC words
Cross-curricular impact with learners successfully applying phonics knowledge in both Chichewa and English subjects
Community recognition from in-service teachers, staff, and parents who witnessed major improvements in learner performance

Data from the summative assessment of the three classes, shown as percentages, at the end of this project demonstrate the significantly improved learning across all three Standards. The gender disaggregated data illustrates that girls generally perform better than boys in the first years of school due to developmental differences, as would be expected. The tests used in standard three are more advanced. Due to covid and the compressed academic years, the learners in Standard 3 had been exposed to three ‘academic years’ in a two-year project.
