Summary

Raising a Reader is a national non-profit organization providing evidence-based programming that fosters school readiness for children 0-8. RAR partners with nearly 300 Affiliates at 3,000 sites across the nation to implement our programs that are effective and easy to implement! We offer three bilingual family engagement and early literacy programs that improve home literacy environments, increase access to age-appropriate books and increase the frequency and duration of shared reading.

Challenge

Did you know that 90% of brain development happens within the first five years of a child's life? Yet, research shows that 61% of low-income families do not have access to books in the home and parents lack the resources to impact their child's academic success. Children who enter kindergarten behind their peers academically are more likely to stay behind for the rest of their education.

Solution

Raising A Reader is evidence-based, with 39 independent evaluations showing improvements in language and literacy skills, cognitive, social development, communication, comprehension skills, and school readiness. Our Classic Red Book Bag model rotates books weekly and exposes children to over 100 age-appropriate books yearly. Family Shared Reading Program and Super Summer Learning Adventures build home libraries. Studies show that books and shared reading at home lead to future academic success!

Long-Term Impact

Our programs increase access to age appropriate books and increase the frequency and length of time families devote to sharing books. Time spent sharing books at home reinforces emerging decoding and comprehension skills. RAR curriculum is Common Core aligned and includes social emotional and STEM strategies. Our programs foster home to school connection, facilitate family bonding and help set the stage for homework habits essential for future academic success.
