Thanks to support like yours, children across the United States who face systemic barriers to academic success have access to diverse books.
At Raising a Reader, we believe having access to diverse and inclusive books opens avenues for learning and engagement across lines of difference and offers a powerful opportunity to create shared understanding and empathy around ideas and issues. Raising a Reader has over 2,000 diverse books in our collection and titles in 13 languages.
Books are mirrors, windows and sliding doors. We want all children to be able to see themselves in books and experience other cultures, backgrounds and lived experiences and that includes seeking books written by authors, illustrators and publishers with shared lived experiences.
A new nationwide study conducted by FirstBook found that students’ reading scores increase and they spend more time reading when educators add diverse books to their classrooms. And a majority of students choose to read diverse books that serve as mirrors, where they can see themselves.
Over the last 12 months, 141,452 children participated in Raising a Reader and had access to diverse books.
We thank you for your continued support and together we are one step closer to reaching our goal of serving 200,000 children annually across the nation by 2025 and ensuring that all children have the family support and reading skills they need to thrive.
