Hi, Friends,
Recently, we have been offering a lot of in person training for early childhood educators (ECE) in San Diego County. Thanks to a big GITC ECE workshop hosted and promoted by Pauline Crooks of the San Diego County Office of Education's department of Visual and Performing Arts, GITC made a lot of new music friends there,
One of these people, Annie Lee, is an outstanding Head Start leader. She manages training and development for Head Start centers, and teachers around San Diego County with her organization called MAAC Project. MAAC project runs 16 such centers, and partners with even more. Their homepage is linked below.
Thanks to having a profound experience of reconnecting with her passion for music during our workshop, Annie decided that every MAAC teacher should have the opportunity to train in our work. She invited GITC to present at the MAAC headquarters in Vista, CA, and then to offer two big workshops at the MAAC Conference on November 24 out at Harrah's Resort on the Rincon Tribal land. Talk about an immersion!
We brought ukuleles to these events for everyone to try, and Annie committed organizational funds to purchase a big set that she has since distributed to these MAAC Head Start programs. Everyone has the ukes they need to get started. Each center has at least 3 ukuleles for children to share. This is a wonderful start!
On November 7, Annie and I were joined by GITC-trained early childhood educator Jeannine Venegas who teaches at the Southwestern College Child Development Center in Chula Vista, We spoke with the most education-informed and engaging podcast host ever, Drew Schlosberg, on his longest-running community podcast, Spotlight on the Community, Links are shared below. We all discussed some of the ways in which music can shape the minds, calm the emotions, and educate young children. We talked story, and let people know about upcoming events. If you have a minute, please listen!
Since then, GITC has instituted regular training for anyone teaching in early childhood, hosted by MAAC, and we are preparing to begin coaching visits to these centers. We'll be keeping you posted about the lively learning we hope takes place as an outgrowth of your assistance in developing these programs, bit by bit, uke by uke. Thank you so much for making this work possible!
Together, even in challenging times, we are opening doors, windows, hearts and minds through music and the power of song!
With appreciation,
Jess
