People living with intellectual disabilities especially Down syndrome encounter many disadvantages in society and are often subject to stigma and discrimination. Marginalized and disproportionately poorer, people living with Down syndrome are particularly vulnerable to crisis. In Bangladesh, skills and potentials of most people living with Down syndrome remain untapped, under-utilized or under developed. The proposed project targets 10 disadvantaged adults with Down syndrome in Bangladesh.
The project is located in rural and urban communities. People with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities have limited access to education and equality. They are lacking lifelong education facilities and left behind as a burden for the family and community . In such socio-economic condition they remain far from the inclusive development process. Due to poverty and hardship these children and adults with Down syndrome lead a very miserable life at family level and at the community.
The project aims to explore solutions to generate livelihood supports for the people with Down syndrome in a sustainable way. The project specifically targets adults with Down syndrome in the region of Gazaria and Dhaka city. The initiative intends to increase work opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities in general, however targets specifically adults with Down syndrome in the community. The standards of living of adults with Down syndrome will also be enhanced by the project.
The proposed project is likely to ensure livelihood support for the adults with Down syndrome in the given community and will empower these marginalized sections of the community. Through the support, these adults with Down syndrome will be self-reliant and able to lead their life comfortably in the community thus building a sustainable inclusive community. They will get opportunities to utilize their talents for supporting their family and the community. Thus the community will be empowered .
