The American Foundation for Children with Aids has recently completed the construction of 4 double LooLove toilet units at the Bandage the Wounded (BTW) Orphanage site in the rural village of Khozi in Southern Zimbabwe. We visited BTW yesterday on a routine monthly monitoring trip and had a chance to speak with, Sandy, the Orphanage founder about how much the toilet units were appreciated by the staff and children.
Sandy explained that prior to having the LooLove toilets there were no sanitary ablutions available to them at all and that when "nature called" they had no option but to find a secluded spot in the surrounding bush to relieve ourselves. She went on to say that it was difficult for her to put into words what a difference AFCA had made in their lives by building the LooLove toilets.
"I guess trying to make someone who has never been in our position understand how huge this is for us is difficult. But the word 'dignity' kind of sums it up for me. You have given us our dignity back....and that means an awful lot to all of us here. Thank you AFCA from the bottom of our hearts for what you have done," Sandy said. She went on to explain that the children previously had to go into the bush in groups of 3 or 4 because they were afraid of going alone and that the safe sanitation that the toilets provided was excellent.
