Latrines are a Game Changer

By Gary | Partner in Africa

The American Foundation for Children with AIDS, in partnership with Kumusha Wines and Grace Water Initiative, funded the building of latrine blocks and provision of a safe water supply for Bandage the Wounded Children's Orphanage in the remote rural village of Khozi in Gwanda District in Matabeleland South Province in Zimbabwe.
The children in this facility had no proper shelter, meal preparation area, running water or safe sanitation systems.  The provision of safe clean latrines and running water were identified as the most crucial of their needs and AFCA mobilized to provide these for the 42 children who call the orphanage home.
Together with Grace Water Initiative, AFCA surveyed and drilled a borehole and set up a piping system and storage tank to hold the water.  Then followed the partnership with Kumusha to build the toilet blocks. Staff and children from the orphanage also played their part by moulding clay bricks which was an incredible effort on their part. These traditional bricks are then sun-dried before being fired in basic kilns.
The latrines were a real game changer for the children as previously had no toilets at all!  Thank you to AFCA for this crucial funding as it has made the lives of our 42 children a lot safer and easier.
The team here at the American Foundation for Children with AIDS thanks you for supporting this project and the work we do for the children in Africa.  If you would like to learn even more about what we do or how you can meet some of the children you have helped, please contact Tanya Weaver at tweaver@AFCAids.org.
