Good, Decent Toilets for 49 families in Zimbabwe

In many rural areas of Zimbabwe, access to safe sanitation systems and clean drinking water remains just a dream for many families.

AFCA investigated this situation in the Districts of Matobo and Umzingwane in late 2023 and discovered that almost half of families (particularly those households affected by HIV/Aids) had zero or at best very rudimentary sanitation systems and often has to depend on unprotected water sources.  Outbreaks of diarrhea were a common occurrence and in some areas Cholera and Dysentery were also reported.

In response, in 2024 AFCA initiated it's LooLove project which provides a well built safe latrine plus a water filter and solar lamp to the most vulnerable families.  Fast forward to 2026 and 140 LooLove units later the program continues. The community at large is tremendously excited about this program...in fact so much so that when we announced that the next two latrines would be built at the local Mlahlandlela Clinic and would be designed to accommodate disabled folk using wheelchairs, each of the 9 villages that the clnic serves sent a young volunteer to assist with the preparatory work. This includes digging a 3.5 metre deep pit for each latrine and gathering local rock and stone to be used in the foundations. The construction of these two toilets will begin on September 28th and will be ready for use by mid October.
