Lotus Pedals, together with our local partner, Bayon Primary School, provided 21 bicycles to female students at Run Ta Ek. Bayon Primary School Project has been supporting a primary school located in the Angkor Wat temple area in Siem Reap Province. Last September, the Cambodian government, following a UNESCO recommendation and with the desire to preserve the temple area, ordered the relocation of families living near the Angkor Wat gates to another area known as Run Ta Ek, 35 km from their original residence. This has made it even more challenging for the students to commute to school without a bicycle. Having seen the challenges, Bayon Primary School Project decided to move their project from Angkor Wat to Run Ta Ek, so they can continue to help these students.
Thokna is 13 years old. She has been doing very good in school and she always ranks well in class. At home, she helps her younger sister who is studying in 5th grade with her homework and encourages her in her studies. Thokna just finished 6th grade, the last year of primary school, and is going into 7th grade in December 2023. The lower secondary school is 3km away from home, but her parents cannot afford a bicycle.
To make her journey to school more manageable and reducing the likelihood of dropping out, the Lotus Pedals Project provided Thokna with a bicycle. "When I heard that I would get a bicycle from Lotus Outreach, my parents and I were overjoyed because given our situation we would never be able to afford a bike and I would have to walk very far to get to the secondary school. With this bicycle, I promise to go to school regularly and on time. In the future, I want to work for an NGO so I can help people in need."
Thank you for supporting Lotus Pedals!
