A Bicycle to a Brighter Future: Sarorn's Journey

Background

On September 11, 2024, fourteen young women received bicycles through the GATE Phnom Penh Project, thanks to your support of Lotus Pedals. For one of these recipients, 18-year-old Sarorn, the bicycle is far more than a gift—it’s a lifeline, and a tangible step toward a brighter future.

Sarorn’s dedication to education is clear, but financial and personal challenges often interfere. Living with her mother, Phin, and two siblings, Sarorn faces considerable hurdles: her mother works selling Khmer cakes to support the family, while her father, Ngaet, has been absent since the parents' divorce in 2017. Sarorn is the second of three children—her older sister dropped out in tenth grade and now sells bus tickets, while her younger sister left school after sixth grade to help their mother sell cakes. Due to financial limitations, Sarorn’s family lives in a small rental room together. On top of all this, Sarorn lives with a congenital heart condition.

Walking Against the Odds

Until recently, Sarorn walked 2.5 kilometers each way to Borey 100 Knorng High School. The journey was arduous, especially given her heart condition. Each morning, she woke early to help her mother sell cakes, often skipping meals and rushing out the door. By the time she arrived at school, she was drained—physically and emotionally. The long walks left her feeling faint, leading to missed classes and late arrivals.

These challenges weren’t just logistical—they were emotional, too. Sarorn dreamed of studying medicine, but the financial burden on her family forced her to set that dream aside. Instead, she pivoted her focus to a more achievable goal: studying administration, which she hopes will enable her to support her family and provide stability.

Sarorn’s mother, with no formal education herself, firmly supports Sarorn’s schooling, hoping it will provide her daughter with better opportunities than she had.

A Life-Changing Gift

For Sarorn, the bicycle is a symbol of possibility. It has allowed her to reclaim a sense of normalcy in her daily life and renew her commitment to education. Though she has had to adjust her dreams, her resolve to succeed remains as strong as ever. With her growing skills—she’s learning Chinese alongside her regular coursework—she envisions a future where she can work in administration, secure a stable income, and support her family in ways they’ve never known.

Gratitude and Hope

Your support has made all of this possible. A simple bicycle has removed some of the biggest barriers in Sarorn’s life, proving that even small acts of generosity can create ripples of change. For her, this gift is more than a means to an end—it’s a daily reminder that someone believes in her potential and is rooting for her success.

Thank you for being a part of Sarorn’s story. Together, we are not just providing bicycles—we are providing hope, dignity, and a path to a brighter future.
