When she was asked why she chose to study in Yspaniola’s Learning Center, Fany responded “My mother did not go to school and as a result she does not know how to read; I am learning everything so I can teach my mother”.
Fany has been attending Yspaniola’s classes ever since she was a 6 years old. Now that she is 13 years old, she is attending our “Reading and Grammar” class. Taught by Mayra, students learn to master reading and comprehension, as well as grammar rules.
Fany says that being in this class gives her a great advantage at school. It has allowed her to improve her grades in some school subjects and in some classes even get ahead when her classes in school taught her about elements that she already had learned with Mayra. Fanysaid:
“Being in this class has contributed to my appreciation for reading. With Mayra, we do a lot of reading and then she asks us questions afterwards in order to work on our comprehension skills. As a result, this has made me enjoy reading and writing more and it makes me feel inspired.”
Fany says that her favorite genre to read is folktales, because: : “Reading folk stories gives me more imagination especially if it is a story that I really like. I love to write my own versions, particularly when the stories do not end the way I would have liked them. ”
So far, her favorite story is “La Sirenita” (The Little Mermaid): “I could read “La Sirenita” without getting tired of it. It’s one of my favorite books ever. I have read it and I have seen the movie several times. It’s one of those stories that everytime I read it, I end up with a different version of it. There are so many ways that the story could have been different and I love to write and imagine them.”
In the future, Fany mentioned that she would like for Yspaniola to have a bigger program offering other classes like social studies, math, etc. as they are many of her peers that struggle with those subjects and these are also her favorite subjects in school, in addition to love for literature.
At Yspaniola, we are deeply grateful to all our GlobalGiving donors for making it possible for Fany and her classmates to attend class with Mayra every day. Thank you!
