Shamseya helps families in Egypt claim the health coverage they are entitled to, and takes what their cases reveal to the institutions that run the system, to remove the barriers for the next family.
Egypt is rebuilding how healthcare is paid for, but coverage on paper does not yet mean protection in practice. In 2023, households paid 57.2% of the country's current health spending out of pocket (WHO). Where the new Universal Health Insurance System was running, only 56% of eligible vulnerable people in four governorates were insured by June 2024 (World Bank). Families meet rules, offices and costs that were not designed around them.
We work with families to secure the coverage they are entitled to and see their claims through. Every barrier they meet becomes evidence we take to the institutions that can remove it, so the system works better for those who come next.
We are working toward: Families who claim the coverage they are entitled to, and pay less out of pocket for their care. A health insurance system shaped by the experience of the ones who use it, not only by those who run it. Fewer barriers in the process, because what we learn from individual cases goes to the institutions that can remove them. Communities that know their rights and how to claim them. We report on this project every three months.
