DAKTARI's camp uses a generator and solar panels to power the houses, kitchen, and office. Although the solar panels are green, the batteries that are needed to store the power for use at night are not. Also, they are constantly needing to be replaced and are very, very expensive. DAKTARI is raising funds to replace our old batteries with newer, lithium ion batteries . The newer technology allows for longer battery life and greener energy use.
DAKTARI's camp is located 65km from the nearest city and does not have access to electricity. To power the lights, appliances, and computers, we use solar panels and a small generator. At night, we rely completely on power stored in the solar panel batteries. These batteries need to be replaced often and are not environmentally friendly. Replacing these batteries is also very expensive.
We are raising funds to replace our old, broken batteries with newer, lithium batteries. The new model has enhanced technology that is far more energy efficient. This means that the batteries last a lot longer and don't need to be replaced as often. It will save DAKTARI a lot of funds in the long-run and it will provide a more reliable and a greener energy source.
Over time, these solar batteries will pay for themselves as we will not have to replace them as often and we will get more energy from them. With a reliable energy source, we can continue our animal and teaching programs, which greatly benefit the local community.
