Summary

Drought continues in eastern rural Kenya, famine is worsening, the food crisis is extreme. Makindu is located in the semi-arid zone, the worst affected area as annual rainfall is barely a trace. Most people eat just one meager meal a day, if at all. Hungry children do not attend school. Weakened, malnourished children die from treatable illnesses. Makindu Children's Program delivers bulk food baskets to the neediest children and households, providing them a lifeline of nutrition and saving lives

Challenge

Hundreds of children are starving in this drought. Malnutrition is already an inherent problem throughout Kenya and the drought-related famine has pushed it into a humanitarian crisis. The food baskets will provide basic food items of maize, beans and produce (when available) to the neediest children and their households giving them a chance at staying fed, healthy, and in school.

Solution

A Food Basket will be full of available provisions for traditional meals and delivered to the neediest of children and their households. The baskets will have enough bulk food to feed the starving household for many days, keeping many nourished, healthy and in school.

Long-Term Impact

Providing food for nutritious meals to these starving households will shield the children from malnutrition and enable them to attend school and learn valuable skills for a productive future. They will help the children survive this relentless drought and famine.
