Strengthening Character Education The Virtues Project in Community-Based Daycare Centres, Tanzania

By Godwin Mongi | Project Leader

Overview

In early 2025, The Virtues Project (TVP) refresher training was conducted in two community-based Day Care Centers (DCCs) in Tanzania. This initiative aimed to build the capacity of early childhood educators and caregivers in applying the Five Strategies of The Virtues Project to support child moral development and nurturing care practices. The sessions were supported and accompanied by government Educational Child Development (ECD) coordinators to ensure long-term sustainability and alignment with national systems.

What Was Done

  1. Refresher Training Workshops were facilitated for teachers and caregivers in the DCCs. The sessions revisited the Five Strategies of TVP:
    1. Speak the Language of Virtues
    2. Recognize Teachable Moments
    3. Set Clear Boundaries
    4. Honor the Spirit
    5. Offer Companioning
  2. Interactive Coaching and mentoring enabled educators to reflect on their classroom practices, apply virtue-based discipline techniques, and utilize affirmations to reinforce children's positive behaviors.
  3. Joint Participation with Government Officers: Local ECD coordinators attended the trainings and learning visits, contributing to technical guidance and strengthening prospects for institutionalizing the program in public daycare models.
  4. Follow-up and Monitoring Mechanisms were introduced, including peer reflection groups, child observation logs highlighting growth in virtues (e.g., helpfulness, respect), and storytelling sessions that integrate character education.

Observed Impact

  1. Improved Teacher Attitudes and Confidence: Educators reported increased self-awareness and intentionality in their communication with children, particularly in using affirming and respectful language.
  2. Nurturing Classroom Environment: Classrooms have become calmer and more inclusive. Teachers describe children as “more cooperative,” “eager to participate,” and “more emotionally expressive in healthy ways.”
  3. Parent-Teacher Partnership: Caregivers expressed appreciation for the new approach and began adopting some of the strategies at home, reinforcing character building beyond the classroom.
  4. Increased Child Engagement: Children responded positively to the recognition of virtues. One teacher shared how children now “remind each other to be patient and kind,” showing early signs of internalizing values.

Looking Ahead

Following the positive outcomes of these trainings, there are plans to:

  1. Scale the refresher model to additional daycare centers in rural and underserved areas.
  2. Equip caregivers with simplified virtues cards and posters for continuous home use.
  3. Collaborate with local governments to embed TVP into community parenting programs.
