Challenge

Malaria is the largest killer of children in West Africa. Each year, this mosquito-borne disease is responsible for the deaths of 20,000 Malian children under the age of five. In the southern region of Ouelessebougou, over 90% of the population contracts malaria annually. Insecticide-treated mosquito nets help reduce the burden of malaria, but they are not enough. Sadly, children will continue to die without increased malaria control efforts.

Solution

Ouelessebougou Alliance is taking a different approach than others have historically to prevent malaria in Mali: Integrated Mosquito Management. This dynamic combination of methods will accomplish sustainable and ecologically sensitive mosquito control. We are partnering with the University of Bamako, renowned malaria experts and researchers to pioneer a mosquito abatement program in Ouelessebougou. Villagers will also receive education and training on malaria prevention.

Long-Term Impact

The pilot program will reach 10 villages in rural Ouelessebougou with a total population of approximately 10,000 people. The project will help reduce malaria and protect thousands of lives. Through health education and training, villagers will also gain a greater understanding of malaria control interventions and prevention which will improve the public health of village communities. The long-term goal is to expand the program to even more villages in the Ouelessebougou region.
