The Horn of Africa is experiencing a severe drought due to five consecutive rainy season failures. In Mandera county, about 2.5 million livestock have died. Three-quarters of the population urgently need assistance with food and water. Unfortunately, fewer aid agencies are reaching desperate pastoralists in the hinterland. The drought has decimated their livelihoods, forcing some families to migrate to urban centres and putting pressure on an already high level of urban poverty.
For the past three years, Kenya has experienced the worst droughts in 40 years. Food production has failed, & thousands of livestock have died. Many children are malnourished for a lack of food. Northern Kenya, an already impoverished region, is badly affected. A significant segment of the population would starve without external support. Pastoralists can no longer rely on their traditional coping mechanisms of crossing into the neighbouring countries since the drought has equally impacted them.
This is an emergency appeal to reach 5000 families living in villages and urban centres as pastoralist dropouts. These people desperately need water and food for the next few months. This project will give $60 per family per month for the next two months to enable them to buy the food and water they need for survival. Hopefully, they can rebuild their lives and livelihoods after the long rains. GENCAD will identify the beneficiaries with county government officials and local leaders.
The impact of this project is two-fold, 1. The project will enable 5000 families to survive the effects of the ravaging droughts and famine in Mandera County. In addition, the intervention will ensure about 25,000 vulnerable children successfully escape the danger associated with malnutrition. 2. The project will support these families in rebuilding their livelihoods by linking them to other government or donor agencies services that support livelihoods diversification and rebuilding.
