This project will restore the mangrove ecosystem in Korotogo Sigatoka in Nadroga-Navosa Fiji, by replanting 100,000 trees by the year 2031, by planting 5,000 tress for every $12,500 raised until the 100,000 target is achieved. The project aims to restore the natural mangrove shorelines of Nadroga-Navosa to preserve and protect coastal communities. The community will be engaged in planting, trainings and awareness to strengthen ownership and the understanding the importance of mangroves.
Fiji has experienced a loss of more than 1,500 hectares of mangroves shoreline in the past decades. The losses have been primarily due to increased rates of disasters, and anthropogenic pressures. The mangrove ecosystem is a crucial part of local Fijian culture. The loss of mangrove has affected the way of life, and additionally left coastal communities exposed to the affects of climate change, with problems such as coastal erosion, waves, and loss of marine life.
Planting 1 meter tall saplings as opposed to seeds, and using strategically designated mangrove species for each coastal zone, will ensure a higher survival rate. The increased survival coupled with timed planting and replanting along with monitoring and evaluation the project aims to restore the coastal mangrove ecosystem. The community's constant engagement in planting, trainings, and awareness will ensure better ownership and security for the mangroves.
The project's restoration of mangroves will promote better conditions for various fish species, crustaceans, and marine plants to thrive. The complex root networks of mangroves will prevent coastal erosion subsequently lowering the turbidity of the lagoon. This will improve harvest for the communities, protect the community from adverse coastal conditions and preserve the traditional way of life, ensuring families' health and well-being.
