Dear Supporters,
The last quarter and Christmas of 2017 has been a quiet one in terms of forward movement with Trust ideas.
Christmas at Pez Maya is not so much a holiday but more of a chance to get caught up with everything we haven’t had time for during the year, we arrange and complete a huge amount of maintenance on our boat engines, compressors and O2 kit.
Following on from last quarters report about the 6 people from Punta Allen who we trained up to AOWD we have since employed one of the group as a boat captain here at Pez Maya. This is great not only for GVI as we support more Mexican people but also from Alejandros point of view. He is a very experienced boat captain but we are able to exchange a lot of knowledge. It has been great to explain many of the safety procedures we abide by here at Pez and the reasoning behind them. He will also be diving with us and we hope he will learn useful skills and become even more comfortable in the water as he prepares for future training.
2018 will see GVI Mexico try to train more local divers up to rescue or even Divemaster so that whether they are diving for fun or monitoring for COBI (Community and Biodiversity) another GVI patner, they will be as safe as possible in the water and able to deal with any emergency situation in the most pragmatic way. If we hadn’t taken on and trained these people I doubt we would have sparked the interest in working here from Alejandro, he is very interested in the scientific education we provide to our volunteers and when he isn’t working on the boats he really enjoys listening into the lectures and presentations we give on base, adding his own useful information which we as staff really appreciate as local people always have a greater understanding of their local environment. However long Alejandro works with us I hope he takes any useful information away with him, whether it be safe diving procedures or ideas talked about during our environmental education presentations and that this may entice more people to come and work or train with us in 2018.
We look forwrad to sharing an exciting 2018 with you!
All the best,
Pez Maya
