Dear Supporters,
Twice this year the Marine Conservation team here in Pez Maya at the heart of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere reserve, held an event for Project AWAREs Finathon. This event held over a period of two weeks, besides raising funds for marine conservation, aims to create awareness on marine conservation. The participants of the Finathon were the volunteers and staff of the GVI Pez Maya base.
The events held during the two weeks consisted of educational presentations, video documentaries, quizzes, social media contest, sand sculptures competition, relay races, shark fin design, lionfish hunt and treasure hunts.
A total of $1134 was donated to Project AWARE, directly impacting in the projects described below:
Dive Against Debris™,
Project AWARE collects marine debris data from divers through its flagship citizen science program, Dive Against Debris™, to help build a clearer picture of the underwater trash that threatens ocean life. Informing community action, identify local decisions, and influence change at all levels.
Sharks and Rays in Peril Campaign
Project AWARE advocates for science-based fishing limits for sharks and rays and a precautionary approach to be taken when species information is lacking. Pushing the implementation of protection policies for some of the world’s most threatened sharks and rays – including global wildlife agreements and inter-government treaties like CITES, CMS or regional fishery regimes.
Dive Against Debris App launch
Project AWARE will introduce a mobile app making data collection and reporting much easier. Users will be able to sort, record and report debris straight after survey dives onto mobile devices even if there is no internet connection right away as well as check previous surveys and result. The platform will be available for iOS and Android.
Shark & Ray Sustainable Tourism Guide launch
Project AWARE joined forces with WWF and The Manta Trust to develop the first guide of its kind to provide comprehensive and practical guidance on tourism best practices for shark and ray tourism businesses. The guide will include a toolkit which includes self-assessments, checklists and example codes of conduct.
A message from Lauren, a fundraising specialist at Project AWARE, "The commitment of divers and ocean lovers like you is critical to tackling problems beneath the waves. Thank you for taking action! Your Finathon events were impressive – what a great group of people! We can’t thank you enough for spreading our message and promoting this cause close to all our hearts.
