3rd update on Securing the Future of Mastic Gum Trees Program in Greece

By Erica Lympousi | Development Associate

Following the severe storm "Atena" in September 2024, which caused significant damage to the mastic-growing areas on Chios, we had to temporarily halt our activities. However, we are pleased to report that the training sessions for Local Coordinators and Mastic Growers were successfully resumed in December 2024, as we were planning to.

Since then, a total of more than 65 hours of practical and theoretical training have been provided to Local Growers, and 40 hours to Mastic Growers. These training sessions have covered a variety of critical topics, including:

  • Mastic Tree Diseases
  • Water Resource Management
  • Recycling of Agricultural Packaging Waste
  • Biodiversity of Mastic Trees

To date, 240 beneficiaries have participated in these training sessions, bringing us closer to our goal of reaching 300 beneficiaries by the program’s completion.

Furthermore, in January 2025, we began the process of creating a comprehensive manual on mastic tree cultivation. This manual will be an essential tool for mastic growers, offering valuable guidance on modern cultivation techniques, ensuring sustainable practices for the future.

The program is expected to reach its completion in June 2025, and as part of the closure, we will be hosting a final event to review and reflect on the achievements and impact of the program.

We remain committed to creating a lasting positive impact on the mastic industry and are confident that the ongoing training and support will shape a more resilient future for mastic cultivation on Chios.

As we approach the final stages of the program, we kindly ask for your continued support. Your help is crucial as we work to empower more mastic growers and enhance the sustainability of this unique industry. Please consider sharing this campaign with friends, family, and anyone who might be interested in supporting our efforts.

Thank you so much for your invaluable support!
