Project Report | Dec 21, 2018
A summary of 2018

By Okumu Sylvanus | Project Leader

2018 has been a successful year at Village HopeCore where we have witnessed remarkable success through our health program in Maara Sub County. When managed to conduct 425 mobile clinics in schools and 465 Maternal and Child Health Clinics. Our main targets were children under 5 years, we conducted over 16,586 growth monitoring and supplemented 4,536 children on Vitamin A. In 2018.

Early 2018, we recruited 48 Neighbourhood Community Health Volunteers who have greatly supported in disseminating health education in the villages. The NCHVs have managed to conduct 4,686 home visits and offered health education to over 14,000 community members. The NCHVs also conduct follow up on immunization, pregnancies and children neglect or abuse cases.

Village HopeCore also focused on ensuring that parents have manageable families which were implemented through family planning education and services. We managed to offer family planning services to 3,094 clients and we distributed 42,117 condoms.

In April, we conducted teachers training with an aim of making the teachers champion health services in their respective schools. Our Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) program delivered 4,512 bottles of water treating reagent and 6,580 litres of soap to our partner school. We also conducted water testing using some test kits that helped identify if the drinking water in school tanks are treated or not.

Here are some additional 2017 highlights.

  • We trained 228 teachers as health champions for their respective school.
  • We increased health clubs in partner schools from 40 to 88 with a membership of 19,547 students.
  • Our WASH programme delivered 6,580 litres of soap.
  • We distributed 2,760 treated mosquito nets to at school entry level.

2019 resolutions and objectives include:

  • Recruit and train 112 Neighbourhood Community Health Volunteers.
  • Set up a laboratory.
  • Create a deworming plan for all students every three months.
  • Reach out to 85% of children in the sub-county with free health services.
  • Distribute 5,500 treated mosquito nets to children at school entry level.
  • Offer Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) to 7,000 youths.
  • Reduce the number of girls missing classes due to lack of sanitary towels by 90% through the distribution of sanitary pads.
  • Increase the number of health clubs in schools from 88 to 150.

We are looking forward to a very successful 2019
