Summary

Most water for Mayega, a village community of 2500 people in Tanzania, is collected from a lake in buckets. We will provide: fresh water, delivered via standpipes directly to the villagers; training in sanitation & hygiene standards for all; toilets and training for 970 school pupils; and 'training toilets', with the aim of teaching villagers to build and properly use their own toilet facilities. Every $1 donated through GlobalGiving will be matched with nearly $3 from Rotary International.

Challenge

Water for Mayega village is collected from contaminated sources on Lake Victoria in buckets. This time-consuming task for women & children comes under the threat of attack by wildlife. Some standpipes supplying fresh water have been built but their availability is limited and more are needed. The village school has dilapidated and insanitary toilets; toilets constructed by families are similarly inadequate and widespread open defecation reflect a pressing need for better personal hygiene.

Solution

Solutions are developed with the full involvement of the community. The project will provide 7 more water stand-pipes sited around the village (each stand-pipe will serve up to 40 families). Toilets for the local school (970 pupils) will be built to modern Tanzanian government standards. Villagers will be given practical training to build and properly use their own toilet facilities. Education programs in personal hygiene and sanitation have been developed for delivery to the whole community.

Long-Term Impact

The ready supply of fresh, clean water, better knowledge of the importance of hygiene and good sanitation practices will greatly reduce the incidents of sickness in this poor community of 2500 people. Children, relieved of the daily burden of fetching water, will spend more time on their education. Agriculture will provide more, better quality food for the community. The community will be able to manage, operate and maintain their own water and sanitation facilities in a sustainable way.
