Community LUV is a meal and resource program for people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity. It will provide breakfast snacks and hot nutritious lunch in a "sit down- dine in" experience for 50-65 people each month. Prior to lunch, we will provide participants with free access to hot showers, clean underwear, a selection of clothing, sanitizer, PPE, and access to free barber/beauty services. Additionally, social services providers will be available to address sustainability needs.
Houston is praised as one of the best cities in America for food lovers, with more than 10,000 restaurants representing cuisine from all over the world, but it is one of the worst cities for food security. The food insecurity rate in Houston is approximately 15%, with an alarming 1 out of 4 children facing hunger in the Houston/Harris County area. Each month, this project will serve 50-65 people in Houston's Third Ward where 51.43% of residents screened positive for food insecurity.
Each month, SHAPE's Community LUV program provides the following free services: Hot showers; Clean clothing; Disposable masks, gloves, and sanitizer; Hot dine-in meals; Barber services; Community health education; Social services; Financial education; Toiletries; and Personal care distributions. Access to these essential services not only improves hygiene but also builds self-esteem and helps people who are unsheltered to feel more comfortable in seeking the services they need.
Over two years, this project will supply 1,200-1,560 people with food and services in a welcoming environment in which they can comfortably enjoy some delicious food and be out of the elements for at least a few hours. Access to hot showers and hygiene services will have a positive impact on mental health and limit the risk of some disease factors.
