Mechimo and Theresa Memorial Midwife Scholarship

Summary

Nigeria faces a critical shortage of trained midwives, contributing to high maternal mortality. Mechimo Josephine and Theresa, two sisters, died on the same day due to lack of expert maternal care. This scholarship will fully sponsor 500 rural and underserved women to study midwifery, focusing on maternal health. By training these women, the project will increase the availability of skilled midwives in communities that need them most, reducing preventable deaths among mothers and newborns.

Challenge

Maternal mortality in Nigeria remains among the highest globally, with rural areas most affected due to a shortage of trained midwives. Many women die from complications that could be prevented with skilled care. In addition, underserved communities often lack access to educational opportunities for young women to become healthcare professionals. Without intervention, these regions will continue to face preventable deaths and limited maternal care.

Solution

The project will provide full scholarships to 500 rural and underserved women to study midwifery, including tuition, materials, clinical training, and licensing support. Graduates will return to their communities equipped to provide maternal and neonatal care. By focusing on practical skills and maternal health, the scholarship addresses both education and healthcare gaps. This ensures more skilled midwives are available where they are most needed.

Long-Term Impact

Trained midwives will reduce maternal and newborn deaths in underserved communities. Educated women will serve as role models, encouraging others to pursue healthcare careers. Over time, more rural clinics will have skilled staff, improving overall maternal health outcomes. The project can help build a pipeline of healthcare professionals who understand community needs, creating lasting improvements in maternal care across Nigeria.
