A Year End Update.

Medic Outpost Community Health Worker Team

Happy Holidays to all our Medic Outpost Family

Medic Outpost’s first team of community health workers will graduate at the end of December.  We are so proud of these men and women.  They have worked so very hard to learn our healthcare program and pass our skills evaluations.

The Kajaido District of Kenya is one of the most remote areas in the country.  It is nestled in a barren stretch of land that is subject to extreme drought followed by dangerous flooding that erodes the land of it’s agricultural worth.  The Maasai people are a people of legend.  They have lived on the land in this remote corner of the world for centuries grazing cattle and fighting the indigenous wildlife to survive.  We have all seen them in National Geographic magazines or on their TV specials.  Nothing has changed for them in how they live their life.  That includes healthcare and their lack of resources and access.

Medic Outpost’s mission is to develop healthcare capacity in these remote village clusters in the Kajaido.  Our concept is to empower the local people to be responsible for a part of their own healthcare by training and equipping them to provide basic treatment and preventative evaluation.  The Medic Outpost plan also includes integrating technology into the most impoverished locations in Africa.  No one has done it and Medic Outpost is pushing the limits to allow all people to have access to healthcare.  Our telemedical approach using local people is unique and unprecedented.  It has the potential to change the face of rural healthcare in impoverish areas and provide care and hope in these forgotten lands.

We need your help.  We are raising funds to provide the CHW team with new video capable smart phones.  The University of Texas at Austin McCombs School has developed a custom application for Medic Outpost CHW’s.  They will use this application to create patient reports and share secure data with our project medical control directly from their villages.  We are working with the largest service provider in Kenya, SafariCom, to provide data and service bundles to our team.  It is critical that we provide phones with the right level of capability to each one of the team.

The second need for assistance is to provide comprehensive medical kits to our team that include automated diagnostic kits for patient evaluation and follow up.  Around the world, follow up evaluation is the part of healthcare that has always been lacking or completely missing.  The Kajaido CHW team has been training on follow up and our innovative telemedical concept will provide it.  Our team will work hand in hand with our medical officer partners in the local clinic to provide evaluation using our CHW’s in the villages.  Villages people often must walk up to 14 kilometers to the clinic one way to access any healthcare.  Too often the clinic has no medications or resources to help them.  That causes the people to refuse to make the walk and allow their treatable illnesses to become serious and often life threatening.  The Medic Outpost community healthcare worker program will answer this problem, but we cannot do it alone.

Please consider making a donation to the project this holiday season.  All of your dollars go directly to the project to provide the needed training and equipment.  These men and women are all volunteers.  Your donations will give them the chance to give back to their communities and decrease the pain and suffering for children, adults, and the eldering.  A good way to make a difference this Christmas.
