Summary

This project completes a medical clinic and builds a nurse's hut in a remote village in Northeastern Uganda. Once the buildings are complete the local government will supply a full-time trained nurse to live in the village. This village is home to the poorest of the poor in Uganda. It is reported that 10% of the children do not live to age five. This project, along with clean water which has already been provided, will make a significant long-term impact in the health of the entire village.

Challenge

Wives are becoming widows, children are becoming orphans, and grandmothers are becoming mothers again to care for the orphans, because of poor or non-existent health care and education. A school has been completed in this village to replace the classrooms that have been held under trees. Now we want to finish the medical clinic and build a hut for a resident nurse. This remote village of 15,000 is at least 30 miles from the nearest hospital over sometimes impassable roads.

Solution

This project will provide the facilities and trained nursing care that will significantly improve the overall village health due to HIV/AIDS training, health and hygiene training, malaria treatment, along with TB and Cholera prevention and treatment.

Long-Term Impact

This project will dramatically improve health and hygiene knowledge and practices in a community of over 15,000. It will provide onsite medical care through a full-time trained nurse. The education and medical services this project provides will substantially decrease the infant mortality rate and the number of mothers and children currently lost in childbirth. We hope this project can become a prototype for medical care in other nearby villages.
