The Transit Houses operating in Uvira, South Kivu, and Goma, North Kivu, continue to provide medical assistance such as reparative surgeries for rape-related injuries, psycho-social support, information and referral to legal clinics for victims/survivors of sexual and gender based violence (SGBV). Approximately 1000 SGBV survivors are assisted annually.
The North Kivu safe house continues to engage survivors in activities related to the maintenance of a mushroom farm, set up in an attempt to become auto-sustainable and in order to provide survivors with a reintegration kit. Survivors also receive training on mushroom cultivation, including on mushroom spawn production, effective marketing strategies and others.
As survivors are often rejected by spouses and/or families as a result of the sexual violence they have suffered, local partners continue to raise awareness about reducing SGBV-related stigma and reporting SGBV incidents by engaging in outreach efforts, involving among others local faith leaders.
