Summary

The project aims to promote equity and hygiene. It will sustainably empower 5000 girls in 10 rural schools in the North West Region of Cameroon by providing them with access to comprehensive, age-appropriate, and medically accurate menstrual health education and facilities to effectively manage their periods with dignity. This will eliminate the barriers faced by menstruating individuals, empower them academically, and reduce the environmental impacts caused by poor WASH practices.

Challenge

Menstrual hygiene is a critical development issue in Cameroon. National statistics indicate that 70% of menstruating women and girls, particularly IDPs, lack access to basic sanitation products (VOA May 28, 2024). 9% to 47% of girls stay out of school during menstruation. The lack of gender inclusiveness in menstrual hygiene awareness results in low outcomes. Additionally, indiscriminate waste disposal in schools leads to pollution, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and habitat damage.

Solution

The project educate students on sexual reproductive health, raise awareness about menstrual hygiene management and environmental hygiene, train girls in reusable pads production, equip school clinics with products for menstruating students and rehabilitate school toilets, ensuring access to clean facilities.

Long-Term Impact

The project will lead to improved knowledge on SRH and menstrual hygiene, empower girls to stay in school, complete their education, build brighter futures, and improve their overall health. It is a step toward ensuring that menstruation is not an obstacle to education for adolescent girls. It will enable girls to manage their period with dignity. 20% of the funds will be used to establish a reusable pad production center, creating economic opportunities and fostering community development.
