Summary

Menstrual stigma, lack of access to menstrual products, and low education on reproductive health are putting girls' and women's health at risk. It also limits their life opportunities and, therefore, opportunities for their families and communities. This is worse in low socio-economic and rural communities in Tanzania and Kenya. Over 70% of women said they couldn't afford menstrual products for their last period. Femme International is working to support these communities.

Challenge

Cultural taboos and myths mean that as girls go through puberty, they are unaware of the changes in their bodies, resulting in unhealthy practices, shame and withdrawal from everyday things like education, work, and family support. These cultural taboos then impact education, access to safe products and policies that support women to be active members of society. Poor access to health, housing and decent income in low socio-economic areas and rural Tanzania and Kenya compounds these issues.

Solution

When women understand how their bodies work they are able to make safe & healthy decisions for themselves. This education will break down harmful menstrual taboos which limit women's activities during menses. Access to reusable menstrual products remove the financial burden of menstruation, and ensures girls have safe products to use every month, helping them to concentrate and excel in school, and community life. Products & education will be provided by a network of locally trained women.

Long-Term Impact

Investing in women's health is a direct investment in the entire community's health. This project will improve Tanzanian women's overall health and well-being and help girls stay in school by removing the financial burden and stigma associated with menstruation. Healthy, confident, educated women will become future community leaders and change the world.
