This project will provide acupuncture and other integrative health services to migrant communities in Texas, California, Oregon and Washington disproportionately affected by COVID-19, who have limited access to mental health services. The project will fund over 1,200 treatments across all 4 states.
The COVID pandemic has had a devastating toll on the mental health of people across the US. CDC reports of anxiety and depression went from 11% in 2019, to 41% as of January 2021. Historically underserved BIPOC and migrant populations have been disproportionately affected by these mental health issues related to the pandemic, in addition to intergenerational trauma, systemic racism and economic instability.
AWB provides ear acupuncture, a proven and simple method to lower stress levels and help people balance out their systems in order to feel better and be better equipped to deal with complex situations. We provide this service, free of charge, to communities in need. We also train local practitioners who are able to continue providing treatments to ensure that the communities we reach continue to have long-term access to these mental health services after we are gone.
This project will provide 1,200 treatments and train close to 50 practitioners to continue providing stress and trauma relief acupuncture in underserved communities and gain skills to improve their job and income prospects, bringing well-being to them and their families. We will also distribute 600 earseed packages with instructions for home auricular therapy for wellness to ensure that the people we treat continue to have a safe way to reap the benefits of acupuncture at home.
