This project aims to reduce financial barriers in seeking mental healthcare by providing micro-grants and direct, community-based mental health services to AANHPI individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Last year we had 784 applicants for the Mental Health Assistance Grant and we were able to provide for 30 individuals. This year, we hope to raise to provide for 50 individuals and offer a scholarship to individuals to receive care from our partners at Anise Health.
There is a pervasive cultural stigma that often discourages members of our community from receiving the help they need. In many Asian American communities, and in the greater American population, there exists a general lack of knowledge about mental health and mental illnesses. Because many of the symptoms of suffering are "invisible," it is often harder for mental illnesses to be acknowledged.
Asian Mental Health Project provides educational resources and community care initiatives that help make mental health care more accessible and approachable for the Pan-Asian community. Today, we create multimedia resources, host community events and provide mental health assistance grants.
Asian Mental Health Project started as an entirely grassroots effort in 2018. In 2022, it successfully filed as a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and has expanded its offerings to provide mental health grants to those who display mental health service needs.
