Psychosocial support is critical in building emotional resilience of women and girls survivors of gender based violence. This project will provide group based trauma sensitive Mindfulness practices that help survivors develop better copying mechanisms including reductions in sexual difficulty, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress while helping the survivors become less likely to rely on strategies like avoidance and more able to pay attention.
6 in every 10 South Sudanese refugee women and girls at Adjumani have experienced some form of violence including rape, torture and other forms of sexual violence. This has exposed them to a higher risk of experiencing a range of mental health conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and thoughts of suicide.
The project will facilitate 8 days Trauma sensitive Mindfulness practices to 500 targeted women and girls divided into groups of 10 at a time. This will be facilitated over one months period consisting of 2 classes/sessions per week.
We hope to Improve the overall mental and physical health among refugee women and girls by reducing on the cases of Trauma induced mental illnesses.
