Mentorthon is an annual HAO sponsored mentorship marathon that connects high school students with role models, stories, career advice and lessons from entrepreneurs, professionals and leaders in an effort to reverse role model drain, betting addiction, teenage pregnancies etc. Role models and mentors spare time to go back and speak to students that look up to them. Their amazing personal stories equip young people with life stories, lessons, tools and knowledge and help shape their perspectives.
In 2021, Kenya recorded the third highest teenage pregnancies worldwide with one in every five adolescent girls aged 15-19 already mothers or pregnant. Over 23% of girls under 18 years got pregnant with Kenya recording 317,000 teenage pregnancies. There were estimated 98 new HIV/AIDS infections recorded every week among adolescents of age 10-19 years (Ministry of Health). Kenya is leading in betting in Africa. The national average transition to post-tertiary institutions is 12%.
Urban migration is leading to role model drain in rural Kenya where young people start to lack role models - people from the same backgrounds that have done reasonably well. Funds accrued through this project will allow HAO to facilitate mentorship program that connects Secondary school students with role models, mentors and leaders. Leaders can inspire life skills, self-belief and self-control among youth - valuable skills proven scientifically to predict character, happiness, performances.
This project encourages students from resource-poor rural schools to concentrate on their studies in order to achieve their targets in life. The results of this is that literacy measurements and national test scores will improve among beneficiary schools. More students will graduate from secondary schools and be college ready and gain 21st Century skills for the marketplace.
