Inspiring Brighter Futures through Mentorship

By Margaret Wambui | Project Leader

Introduction

Mentorthon, an annual initiative sponsored by Hifadhi Africa Organization (HAO), is a mentorship marathon designed to connect high school students with role models, career advice, and life lessons from entrepreneurs, professionals, and leaders. This program aims to address critical issues such as role model drain, betting addiction, and teenage pregnancies by providing students with positive influences and guidance. With support from GlobalGiving, HAO successfully carried out its first Mentorthon event at Silale High School in East Pokot.

Objectives of Mentorthon

The primary objectives of the Mentorthon initiative are:

  1. Reversing Role Model Drain: Many young people in marginalized communities lack access to positive role models. Mentorthon seeks to bridge this gap by bringing successful individuals back to the communities where they are most needed.
  2. Combatting Betting Addiction: With the rise of betting addiction among the youth, Mentorthon aims to provide students with alternative perspectives and productive ways to spend their time.
  3. Preventing Teenage Pregnancies: Through mentorship and life lessons, Mentorthon seeks to equip young girls with the knowledge and tools necessary to make informed decisions and avoid early pregnancies.
  4. Inspiring Ambition and Achievement: By sharing personal stories of overcoming challenges, role models inspire students to pursue their dreams and excel academically and personally.

Event Overview

The first Mentorthon event took place at Silale High School in East Pokot, a region that has long faced significant socio-economic challenges. The event was made possible through generous donations received via the GlobalGiving platform, demonstrating the power of community support in driving meaningful change.

Key Activities

  1. Mentor Sessions: The event featured several sessions where role models, including entrepreneurs, professionals, and community leaders, shared their personal stories with the students. These stories highlighted the importance of perseverance, education, and making positive life choices.
  2. Career Guidance: Students received valuable career advice, including insights into various professions, the importance of education in achieving career goals, and how to navigate challenges in their academic and professional journeys.
  3. Interactive Discussions: The mentors engaged in interactive discussions with the students, allowing them to ask questions and seek advice on various topics, including dealing with peer pressure, making informed life choices, and setting long-term goals.
  4. Life Skills Workshops: The event also included workshops focused on developing essential life skills such as communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. These skills are crucial for helping students navigate the complexities of adolescence and beyond.

Impact on Students

The impact of the Mentorthon event was immediately evident in the students' enthusiastic participation and engagement. Many students expressed a renewed sense of purpose and motivation to pursue their dreams. The mentors' stories and advice resonated deeply with the students, offering them a glimpse of what is possible with hard work, determination, and the right support.

Conclusion

The first Mentorthon event at Silale High School was a resounding success, thanks to the support of GlobalGiving and the dedication of the mentors who took the time to inspire the next generation. This initiative marks an important step in HAO's ongoing efforts to empower young people in East Pokot and other marginalized communities. Moving forward, HAO aims to expand the Mentorthon program to reach more schools and students, ensuring that every young person has access to the guidance and inspiration they need to succeed.
