Summary

SkillsUSA provides project-based learning, hands-on planning, and presentation skills offered at Metropolitan Education District. Currently, there are 7 million open jobs, and Americans don't have the skills to fill them. MetroED and SkillsUSA can close the skills gap and provide solid career pathways to high wage, high demand occupations, empowering all students, especially underrepresented, low income and female students in non-traditional jobs.

Challenge

Metropolitan Education District (MetroED) is challenged with providing funding for equal access to all students wanting to enroll in SkillsUSA. Adequate funding allows more students from all 23 career pathways to participate. This essential partnership with SkillsUSA enhances career and technical education, providing the opportunity to develop technical, academic and employability skills, and it makes career and technical education more relevant to the demands of the work force.

Solution

Increased funding will expand student involvement in SkillsUSA at MetroED through their career readiness pathways program. It can close the skills gap and provide solid career opportunities to high wage, high demand occupations. It will empower all students, especially under-represented, low income in non-traditional careers to succeed. No student should have to step away from SkillsUSA due to financial hardship and limit their opportunities to reach their full potential.

Long-Term Impact

This MetroED program will result in an increase of prepared and trained students upon graduation. They will have had the rigor, project-based learning, hands-on planning, and presentation skills for today's work force. These students are empowered for success and able to change the dynamics of their future. They will start their careers from a position of equal opportunity with others in their selected occupation. Let's close the 7 million open jobs in America's employment gap!
