Training local women saving groups

By Henry Okumu | Project Leader

Women Build Financial Security Through Savings Groups
During this reporting period, women saving groups continued to play a critical role in improving household economic stability and financial inclusion among vulnerable women in rural communities. Through weekly savings meetings, members contributed small but consistent amounts of money that accumulated into substantial group savings. These savings enabled women to access affordable loans for business development, school fees, healthcare expenses, and agricultural activities.
Many women who previously lacked access to formal financial services are now actively participating in group-managed savings schemes. Members reported increased confidence in managing finances, planning household budgets, and making independent economic decisions. Several participants used loans from the group to expand small businesses such as vegetable vending, poultry keeping, tailoring, and food processing.
The groups also provided an important platform for financial literacy training. Women learned record keeping, savings discipline, loan management, and business planning skills. As a result, many members improved their ability to generate income and meet family needs without relying on costly money lenders.
Community leaders observed that women involved in saving groups demonstrated stronger economic resilience during periods of financial stress. The collective approach encouraged accountability, mutual support, and shared learning among members.
Research in Uganda has shown that savings group participation can improve women's asset ownership, business ownership, leadership participation, and household decision-making power.
