Training local women saving groups in Tororo

By Henry Okumu | Project Leader

Strengthening Women’s Saving Groups Through Financial Literacy
AlliedAid Uganda conducted a financial literacy training for local women saving groups in rural communities of Tororo District, Eastern Uganda. The training focused on helping women understand the importance of saving regularly, managing household income, budgeting, and making responsible financial decisions.
Many women in rural communities depend on small businesses, farming, petty trade, and seasonal activities for their livelihoods. However, limited financial knowledge often makes it difficult to plan for emergencies, grow businesses, or make productive use of available income. The training therefore provided practical lessons on setting realistic savings targets, keeping simple financial records, separating business and household money, and planning expenditures.
Participants were encouraged to develop a culture of regular saving, even when their income is small. Trainers also emphasized transparency and accountability within saving groups to strengthen trust among members. Women practiced recording contributions, loans, repayments, and group expenses using simple methods that can be managed without sophisticated technology.
The training generated strong interest among participants, with many women sharing their experiences and challenges in managing household finances. The groups agreed to strengthen their saving routines and improve record keeping.
Through this initiative, AlliedAid Uganda is helping women develop practical financial skills that can contribute to stronger households, improved livelihoods, and greater economic resilience in rural Tororo communities.
