Summary

There are over 2 million Migrant Workers on the Thai/Myanmar border who work under slave-like conditions in Thai factories and farms, most often for less than half of minimum wage. These workers are harassed, scammed, trafficked, exploited and extorted by Thai police and other authorities. Yet they continue to cross the border for work to avoid starvation in Myanmar. Addiction and violence are rife in this population due to the extreme abuse they have suffered.

Challenge

THE GOOD NEWS! This year we raised enough funds to purchase the land upon which to build a Training House. Now we just need to build it. Addiction is a huge problem. By preventing and treating substance abuse, we decrease poverty, improve health and educational opportunities and reduce societal violence, including violence against women and children.

Solution

Upon this land, we will build a Training House and plant Moringa trees around the property. Please see our Social Enterprise, MoringAid. We have secured enough funding for the land. Yay! The land will be the base for everything that comes after that. Land, then Training House, then Training with treatment, then Prevention Education, then a Treatment Centre across the border in Myanmar. Clients can help with the care of Moringa trees and harvest for MoringAid.

Long-Term Impact

As we are already established in the area for 20 years, other organizations could refer people to the DARE Network Training House. Our security support would extend to the Training House making addiction services accessible. From here, we can train new Migrant Addiction Workers to improve the lives of Myanmar Mirgrant Workers and their families. As for our Social Enterprise, all profits will go back to the project. More refugees and migrant workers can be involved and feel self-supporting.
