Mission to Mars! Engaging young people in STEM

Summary

We ensure more young people from diverse backgrounds enter higher education, in particular attend the best universities, to study science, tech, maths and engineering - much needed skills for the UK economy. Our sessions, such as 'Mission to Mars', demonstrate how STEM subjects are applied to solve real world (and out of this world!) issues. These sessions engage and motivate young people, which we follow up with practical support and academic tutoring to ensure potential is fulfilled!

Challenge

A 2015 UCAS report found that 18 year-olds from the most advantaged areas are nearly 2.5 times more likely to enter higher education than their peers from disadvantaged areas & 6 times more likely to attend the top institutions. Alongside this we are seeing a huge shortfall in the number of graduates with the science, engineering & tech skills needed for the jobs market. We work to ensure that young people, from diverse backgrounds are given the support they need to fulfill their potential.

Solution

This project finds young people with the academic talent to succeed, breaks the barriers that may stop them achieving and gives them the tools to succeed in STEM. With a combination of aspriation and confidence building sessions, STEM in actions days and academic tutoring we provide students with a strong support network. We work with the same students across four years to nurture their talent, although this specific project will focus on our year 11 group - a critical year for academic success

Long-Term Impact

We have high hopes for our alumni. We expect them to gain places at top universities and go on to be leaders in thier fields. Our students are from diverse backgrounds and thereofre the pipline of talent emerging into the workfoce will be more representative - changing decisions, investments and opportunities in essential ways. This project transforms individual young people's lives - but also transforms our society - for the best possible world.
