By Tony Sewell | 2OO Tutors for students at risk
The evidence from our programme is that 80 per cent of the students at the end of the academic year had better grades
than those who were not on our programme.
The London figure has rocketed by 10 percentage points in the past decade, raising fears that poorer children are being left behind. The Sutton Trust has surveyed 2,500 young people about their education every year since 2005 and the latest results, show how private tuition in London has spread siginifcantly. However at an average cost of £30 an hour this is out of the reach of poor families
The Generating Genius personal tutor programme has now been evaluated by the institute of Education. They concluded:
1 Students enjoyed the small-group working
2 Results in Chemistry saw the best impact followed by physics
3 We should try and gain more funding to work with a bigger group.
4 The need to extend our work outside of London, where academic results were poorer.
Some 44 per cent of London children admitted having had a home tutor, compared with 22 per cent of those outside the capital.
We need additional funds to extend our work to schools outside of London.
