In Ghana, COVID-19 impacts has eroded gains made by YOVI's efforts on women & girls access to livelihood. The project will support 150 Women and Girls from poorest communities in Tamale, also providing nutrition for 1200 children under 5 years. The project is designed to improve upon and develop soybean value chain, because soybean is the women-and girls-friendly crop, having quietly escaped from the basket of staple crops cultivated in Northern Ghana.
The dire economic and livelihood situations among women & girls in Northern Region of Ghana has been worsened by the COVID-19 lockdown whereby 89% of diverse daily wage earners are cash strapped. The project will support 150 women and girls in Tamale on Soybeans production to increase their income & livelihoods. Apart from being a cash-ready crop, soybeans also contribute to a bulk of the protein needs of farm families in Northern Ghana, particularly for nursing mothers & children under 5 years.
The project will provide training to women and girls in soybean food processing & utilisation in order to secure nutritional benefits for young children, apart from the economic benefits of increased incomes, reducing poverty & hunger, food security & stable livelihoods to be derived. The project has therefore being designed for participation of young nursing mothers. The training and capacity building component will be extended in the form of a replication to more beneficiaries communities.
The project will train and support 150 women & girls allowing them and their families to have stable incomes, health and sustainable livelihoods, with improved nutrition for 1200 children under 5 years.
