Mobile Breast Cancer Screening

By Christopher Adjah | Project Leader

Introduction Adjah Cancer Support Ghana (ACSG) is dedicated to the fight against cancer by promoting awareness, providing support to patients, and facilitating early detection. Our latest initiative, the Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Project, was launched to bring critical screening services directly to communities across Ghana, especially in remote and underserved areas.

Project Overview The Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Project aims to increase early detection of breast cancer among women in Ghana. By utilizing a mobile unit equipped with state-of-the-art mammography equipment, ACSG reaches women who might otherwise lack access to essential screening services.

Objectives

  • To provide free breast cancer screening to women in remote and underserved communities.
  • To educate women about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.
  • To reduce the mortality rate associated with breast cancer through early diagnosis and timely intervention.

Activities

  1. Community Outreach: Engaged with local leaders and organizations to raise awareness about the project and schedule visits.
  2. Screening Camps: Conducted mobile screening camps in various locations, ensuring accessibility for women who cannot travel to urban centers.
  3. Educational Sessions: Provided educational materials and conducted sessions on breast cancer awareness, self-examination techniques, and the importance of regular screenings.
  4. Follow-Up Care: Established a referral system for women requiring further diagnostic tests or treatment, ensuring continuity of care.

Impact

  • Screened over 1,000 women across 15 communities in the first three months of the project.
  • Detected 30 cases of suspected breast cancer, which were referred for further diagnostic evaluation and treatment.
  • Increased awareness about breast cancer and early detection among over 5,000 community members through educational sessions and outreach activities.

Challenges

  • Logistical difficulties in reaching very remote areas due to poor infrastructure.
  • Limited resources for follow-up care and treatment for women diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • Overcoming cultural stigmas and misconceptions about breast cancer and screening.

Future Plans

  • Expand the project to cover more regions and increase the number of women screened.
  • Secure additional funding to enhance the capacity of the mobile unit and provide more comprehensive follow-up care.
  • Collaborate with more local and international partners to strengthen the project and ensure sustainability.

Conclusion The Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Project by Adjah Cancer Support Ghana has made significant strides in promoting early detection and awareness of breast cancer. With continued support and collaboration, we aim to expand our reach and save more lives through early intervention and education.

Acknowledgments We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our donors, partners, volunteers, and the communities we serve for their unwavering support in making this project a success.
