The initiative's purpose is to identify, train, connect, and work with recovery advocates in all 50 states. By sharing resources, building skill sets and taking action as a powerful confident constituency, our goal is to affect change impacting millions of people in a positive way by focusing on local issues across the country specific to addiction recovery and ending America's long-standing addiction crisis.
Addiction is an epidemic-level illness that can be fatal. Also known as substance use disorder, this mental health condition is widely misunderstood. The stigma of addiction, lack of education about substance use disorder, limited recovery resources, proliferation of addictive substances, and almost zero legal protections for people who struggle with addiction have created a national health crisis that kills one person every four minutes.
Mobilize Recovery builds capacity for organized civic advocacy around the country. We will identify, train, connect, and work with recovery advocates around the country, in all 50 states. Each of these selected advocates will have lived experience with substance use disorder---ideally, as a person in sustained recovery. By sharing resources, coordinating our agenda, and taking action as a powerful, confident constituency, we will create change that affects millions of people in a positive way.
Potential long-term impact of this initiative is directly measured by lives saved. Through an engaged, trained, connected, and active group of local and regional recovery advocates, more pro-recovery efforts--including recovery support services, accessible treatment options, reduced shame and stigma, safe and stable housing options, employment opportunities, and eliminating discrimination on the basis of recovery status--will emerge on a grassroots level.
