With this project it becomes a reality that children and young people in Puerto Rico can have a public Montessori education, which is known for being one that educates for peace. Currently there are 60 public Montessori schools located in low income areas and violent environments, where 82% of the participants live below the poverty level and as time goes by that percentage increases. It is through public Montessori education that Instituto Nueva Escuela manages to bring peace to communities.
Today violence is experienced worldwide, at country, community and family level. Many establish that inequality is one of the main causes of violence, although it is not a determining factor. This idea is based on the fact that inequality produces situations of frustration that cause violent behavior. 82% of the population served by public Montessori schools in Puerto Rico live below the poverty level, which is why accessibility to an education for peace such as Montessori is vital in the city.
For Maria Montessori, peace is a lifestyle that is acquired from childhood through education. The Mission is to achieve peace in Puerto Rico through the development of academically excellent schools with cultures of peace; using the collective methodology to remake the social fabric of its schools and the Montessori methodology, based on the science of human development, to achieve schools that optimally serve children and young people.
In the 60 Montessori public schools that currently have this educational method, communities have witnessed the positive change in the academic performance of children and young people. Each academic year more schools want to implement it, because in addition to academic achievements, the implementation has reduced drug use and incidents of violence in the surrounding communities and has stopped school dropouts rates. We work hard so that students have the best school and bring a social change.
