Project Report: Shikarpur, Sindh
This summer, our project area in Shikarpur, Sindh was affected by floods again, for the third year in a row, but mercifully the devastation caused was much less than the previous two years.
However, the need for our services at the Pediatric ward of the Civil Hospital in Shikarpur remains critical. The number of children admitted to the ward has increased over the past two months from an average of 900 per month to around 1300 a month. Most of the children were admitted for the treatment of diarrhea, malaria or respiratory infections. The flooding has left many families with few resources to provide food for their children. As a result, malnutrition is commonly seen in our pediatric wards.
As winter approaches we would like to implement measures to reduce the risk of respiratory infections in the children by optimizing the immunization rates and educating the families on ways to minimize the risk of spreading infections.
SHINE Humanity is very grateful to you for contributing through Global Giving. Your donation has enabled us to continue serving in this area since the floods in 2010. Your contributions help in the provision of medicines and to supplement the salary of the dedicated staff at this facility. The charitable care provided in this unit eases the burden on the families that are plagued by an endless cycle of poverty exacerbated by repeated flooding of their land.
In this season of giving, we ask you to please give generously for the continued care of the children of Shikarpur and we thank you on behalf of SHINE Humanity and our beneficiaries in Shikarpur.
