Improve Health for Mothers & Children in Pakistan

 Thank you for helping SHINE Humanity and CDRS treat  12322 patients at the Charsadda, Swat and Shikarpur Healthcare facilities in July and August 2012.  7283 [59%] of the patients were children, 4223 [34%] were women and 816 [7%] were males. 

 With your support, ten normal and healthy babies were delivered at the Swat Maternal and Child Healthcare facility  during July and August,  bringing the  total to 27 babies delivered at this center since it started operating a year ago. We are happy at reaching this milestone,   since delivering babies at home has been the cultural norm in this region. This facility  has been supported by a grant from  International Development and Relief Foundation, individual donors,  and Global Giving and has served 36,482 beneficiaries, mostly women and children  from Aug 18, 2011 to Aug. 31st.2012. Most of the patients at the Swat facility  have been treated for upper respiratory tract infection,  acute diarrhea, urinary tract infection, aches and pains ,acid peptic disease, anemia and hypertension. Our recent testing of the drinking water  in Swat found the samples to be contaminated and we are advising the  residents on how to make their water safe for drinking; thus expanding our patient care to a population-level of service.

 The Charsadda Community Clinic continues to provide primary care and urgent care services to  the flood affected area of Charsadda. The Clinic has been moved to another location nearby and served 3954 patients in July and August. 90 percent of these beneficiaries were women and children mostly suffering from diarrhea, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, injuries and wounds.  

There has been a rise in the cases of diarrhea and suspected malaria at the SHINE Humanity/CDRS pediatrics ward in Shikarpur during these summer months when 1891 children were treated. With the departure of the other nonprofit organization that was supporting the nutrition requirements of the malnourished children, we have undertaken the care of these children as well  and seek your help in providing the best care possible for all the beneficiaries we serve.

On a recent hot day in July, three year old Muniba was brought to our Charsadda outpatient facility by her mother and aunt. Her family could not afford to take her to the private healthcare centers for the treatment she needed. Muniba had diarrhea with blood in the stools, fever and mild dehydration. She was promptly examined by our doctor and started on the medicines she needed and was sent home as soon as she was stable and better. 

Muniba is just one of the many patients who are provided care at our  facilities in Swat, Charsadda and Shikarpur with your support. In May, 6446 beneficiaries received treatment at these facilities, where most patients  came in with  diarrhea, malaria, malnutrition, measles, febrile fits or gastritis.  With the onset of summer we are seeing more of diarrheal diseases at our centers as opposed to respiratory infections which are common in winter.
