We are pleased to have started music classes for the children of Mara on the border between Venezuela and Colombia. With 230 children from 17 communities, the classes are taught by El Sistema (the National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras and Choirs of Venezuela) twice a week, organized into two groups by age. WITH YOUR HELP, WE CAN PROVIDE A LIFE-CHANGING OPPORTUNITY FOR THE WAYUU CHILDREN.
Venezuela has the largest humanitarian crisis in the Western Hemisphere, with over 7 million people. The indigenous Wayuu was identified as the Foundation's focus because of the incredible challenges faced. The 462,000 Wayuu people at the Venezuelan (294,000 Wayuu) and Colombia border have suffered severe historical discrimination and inequality. They have the least access to infrastructure, with no or severely deficient access to water, electrical, gas, and sewage systems.
The music program will help to slower the diaspora of Wayuu families to other countries, since the main factor causing displacement to another country is the lack of food, medicine, and education.
The music program will help end child trafficking for so many Wayuu children that leave in search of better opportunities. Promoting musical education helps build community. Music will fortify community cohesion, helping to improve children's lives. Preservation of Indigenous music that has never been written in the past and as a result, indigenous music has been lost on time. .
